The values we hold at Ico Traders:
Ico Traders was born out of a moment that forced a rethink. The Christchurch earthquakes shook the ground & at the same time, a lot of assumptions about what mattered. For me, it became clear fast. Family close. Work that felt honest. Something built to last.
Wire furniture was the answer I didn’t see coming. But once I found it I couldn’t let it go.
Buy Less. Use It More:
This is not a slogan we use and forgot about. It is genuinely how we design.
Our wire chairs, stools and tables are multifunctional and light enough to move from room to room: The kitchen island to the back deck, to a friend’s place for the weekend. Nothing is precious. Everything is purposeful. The simplicity of each design means it won’t date when trends shift. We dont believe in buying for a moment or for a season. We're in it for the long run.
Sustainability isn’t just about what a design is made from. It’s about how long it lasts, how easily it adapts and what happens at the end of its life. Steel ticks every box. It can be repowdercoated in a new colour if it wears or you want a refresh. It can be reused, repositioned and when the time finally comes, recycled. Iron is a sustainable resource and easily recyclable, making it an obvious choice of material for our wire.
Our goal is not to make furniture you replace in three years. That’s not a business model we believe in.
Designed for This Land.
The Piha Lounger, the Coromandel Chair, the Benmore Bench, the Hokianga Hanging Chair.
A lot of our designs are named after a town or place that has the same feel as the piece itself. Others are named after places with special personal meaning. Bantay, the farm where I grew up. Mahoe, the name of a farm belonging to people dear to me. These aren’t just product names. They’re a map of this country and what it means to be at home in it.
The colours are mixed by hand, with the New Zealand landscape in mind. Every tone you see in our range, the warm neutrals, the deep greens, the quiet ochres, are the colours of our coastlines and our hills.Â
We aim for classic designs that can be handed down through generations. That’s the ambition every time we start a new piece. Not if it will sell well this season. More, if it will still belong in twenty years.
Carbon Positive. Not Carbon Neutral. Positive.
Since early 2021 we have been auditing our carbon emissions and offsetting them by 120%. We are proud to be certified as a Climate Positive Business by Opportune. We invest in credits sourced from Permanent Forests Ltd and our funds help to grow and protect the Waipuna Bush in Banks Peninsula. Delivering climate resilience, protecting waterways, controlling erosion and conserving biodiversity.
Everyone at Ico Traders has ties to Banks Peninsula. This isn’t a tick-box exercise. It’s the land we love & live on.
Measure. Reduce what we can. Offset what we can’t. Keep improving. Packaging, supply chain, powder coating, there is always more to work on and we don’t pretend otherwise.
Small Team. Long Relationships.
Ico Traders is still me, Bridgett and Georgia. We work closely together. We pack boxes. We unload containers. We juggle school pick-ups and deadlines the same way our customers do.
The factory we work with in China is run by people I have known for 13 years. Their staff are long-standing. So are ours. If something goes wrong, we work through it together. And that matters because every piece of our furniture is handcrafted, with each piece hand-bent and welded.
Building a relationship with the people who make it is not something you can outsource.
The Confidence to Buy Once
We know our customers are intelligent & think carefully before they spend. They do the research & know if you buy low quality, you'll get furniture that may look the part, but wont last the season. The salt air will get in. The powder coat will peel. The welds give way & the legs may bend. They want quality.
We made Ico Traders for exactly that person.
Solid steel not tubular. PVDF base coat before powdercoating for heat and rust resistance. Stainless steel for coastal and high-humidity areas. Cushions made locally in Christchurch. Every piece designed to be used, moved, loved and kept.
“My aim is to design timeless styles without compromising innovation or functionality. I hope you love your purchases as much as I love designing them.” Miranda Osborne, Ico Traders
