Ico Traders started in Christchurch, but Wellington's conditions have shaped our thinking as much as anywhere. If your furniture can survive a wild Wellington wind, it can survive most things New Zealand throws at it.
Wellington doesn't do gentle either. Wind that doesn't let up for days, driving rain, and salt air that reaches almost every suburb given how close the harbour and the south coast both sit to the city. Add UV that's stronger than people expect at this latitude, and furniture gets tested here in ways it never would somewhere sheltered.
We finish Ico's steel wire furniture with a PVDF base coat before powder coating, giving genuine protection against rust and fading. If you live in Oriental Bay, Island Bay, Seatoun, Lyall Bay or anywhere else exposed to the harbour or the south coast, we recommend the stainless steel range specifically. It's the strongest defence we make against salt spray and humidity, and Wellington is exactly the kind of place that earns it back. Remember though, anything will deteriorate if not looked after & regular washing down will extend the life of your stainless steel furniture by years.
Even further from the coast, in Karori, Khandallah, Johnsonville or out toward the Hutt Valley, stainless steel range is the best for use outdoors.

I design pieces to last well past the first owner. You can repair welds and repowdercoat steel wires. If a colour's had its decade, or the elements have taken their toll, it doesn't need replacing. Repair, repaint, reuse.
Ico Traders has always been upfront about how we make our furniture. I design all the wire furniture in Christchurch. The supplier I've worked with for over a decade in China carries out production. Christchurch people make our soft furnishings and timber tops locally.

Look for furniture that's stable, not overly light. Ico Traders furniture is perfect for windy places. Being made of wire, means the wind blows right through the chairs. They'd be great beside the. harbour or in coastal Wellington suburbs.
We design our stainless steel range with coastal conditions in mind. It offers the strongest protection we can make against salt air and humidity, relevant across most of Wellington given how exposed the city is.
However, it does not mean you can leave everything outside without any care. Salt air is like melting sugar, it will stick & eat away at the surface. Regular wash downs prolong the life of any furniture, whether or not it's Ico TradersÂ
Yes. We can strip steel right back and recolour it to look brand new. You can repowdercoat it in a new colour, which is part of why we design furniture to last well beyond trends, rather than needing replacement.
