How to Care for Your Ico Traders Wire Furniture.

At Ico Traders, we design wire furniture that lasts. Made from steel - a strong, durable, and recyclable material. Our pieces are built to stand the test of time. To help protect your investment and keep your furniture looking its best, it’s important to follow some simple care and maintenance steps.

Why Maintenance Matters.

Each Ico Traders piece is finished with a PVDF base coat and coloured powder coat, which offers protection against the elements. However, steel can still rust if it’s scratched, damaged, or left in harsh environments for long periods.

If you live near the ocean or in areas with high humidity and rainfall, we recommend choosing from our stainless steel range for extra resistance.

Furniture Care: Getting Started.

Unpacking Tips.

When unwrapping your furniture:

  • Use care with knives or scissors to avoid scratching the surface

  • Avoid placing table tops or wire surfaces directly on the ground, we recommend a soft blanket or carpet, to avoid scratches.

Cleaning Guidelines.

To keep your wire furniture clean:

  • Use a soft clothmild non-detergent soap, and water

  • Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh cleaners, which can scratch the surface

  • For stubborn grime, use a non-abrasive multi-purpose or window cleaner

Always inspect your furniture while cleaning. If you notice scratches or early signs of rust, apply touch-up paint immediately to prevent further damage.

Also, clean off bird droppings and sunscreen as soon as possible. These substances can break down the protective finish and lead to staining or corrosion.

Regular Maintenance Tips.

Taking a few regular steps will extend the life of your furniture and keep it looking great:

  • Check that plastic sliders on the feet are still in place. Replace any that go missing to avoid metal-to-ground contact.

  • If you see rust forming from a bump or scratch, touch it up quickly using enamel paint. You can also spray affected areas with WD-40 or CRC to drive out moisture and prevent corrosion.

  • To treat T-staining, apply a liquid or paste polish or even car wax. The earlier you act, the better the results.

Caring for Furniture in Harsh Conditions.

New Zealand’s coastal and wet-weather environments can be tough on iron and steel.

  • If you live near the sea, we strongly recommend our premium stainless steel range.  While it looks exactly the same, it will resist salt air and moisture more effectively.

  • Wash down regularly to remove sticky salt residue.  This is what causes harm to paintwork and steel.
  • Cover your furniture when it’s not in use, especially during winter. Use a breathable cover to avoid mould build-up and moisture retention.

  • For maximum protection, store furniture in a dry, sheltered, and well-ventilated area during the off season. Doing so will also reduce the chance of knocks and scrapes & keep your furniture looking good.

Sustainable Disposal and Recycling.

When you’re ready to dispose of packaging or old furniture:

  • Take all recyclable materials to your local refuse centre

  • Where possible, choose to reuse, re home, refurbish, or recycle instead of sending items to landfill

At Ico Traders, we believe in long lasting design and circular living. With the right care, your wire furniture will remain a beautiful and functional part of your space for many years to come.

  • HOW COMFORTABLE ARE THE RANGITOTO STOOLS REALLY? We’ve spent hours perfecting the wire spacing across our outdoor and indoor range so that every stool is super comfortable to sit in, even without extra padding. You can easily sit on a Rangitoto stool for hours, however if you’re in shorts, you might get a few wire lines on bare legs! For extra style and all-day comfort, you can place in a round sheepskin, or a round wool stool pad which we have made to order.
  • ARE THE CHAIRS HARD TO PUT TOGETHER?  No - they are very easy, put the legs through the tunnels of the seat, place the nut up against in and screw together. There are 4 x screws to assemble them.  We can assemble them for you: $35.00 per chair. If you are based in Christchurch, you can pick them up and save freight costs. For the rest of New Zealand, if the chairs are assembled, freight costs may increase.
  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MILD STEEL AND STAINLESS STEEL QUALITIES? Mild steel furniture is best suited for indoor areas or sheltered outdoor spaces in dry climate conditions. It’s ideal for use inside, covered patios, or sunny decks protected from rain. Stainless steel furniture is the right choice for coastal regions, high humidity, or areas exposed to salt winds. For homes near the sea or in damp environments, stainless steel ensures long-lasting durability and resistance to corrosion.
  • HOW ARE YOU A SUSTAINABLE COMPANY? Ico Traders is a proudly carbon positive company, audited annually by Opportune New Zealand. We reduce waste, reuse materials and recycle wherever possible. Our carbon footprint is offset through contributions to Waipuna Bush, helping to regenerate native forest near Christchurch, New Zealand. When you choose the Piha Lounger, you’re supporting sustainable, timeless design, made to last.
