Let’s Talk Steel: What Is 201 Stainless Steel (And Why Do We Use It)?

When it comes to outdoor furniture, not all steel is created equal. At Ico Traders, we work with different types of steel depending on the job and the environment it’s destined for.

When it comes to outdoor furniture, not all steel is created equal. You’ve probably heard of mild steel and stainless steel, but what about 201 stainless steel?

Let’s break it down in simple terms: what it is, why we use it, and how it compares to other options like 204 stainless steel or mild steel.

So, What Is 201 Stainless Steel?

201 stainless steel is a type of austenitic stainless steel, meaning it’s part of a family known for being strong, non-magnetic, and corrosion-resistant. It contains:

  • 16–18% Chromium

  • 3.5–5.5% Nickel

  • 5.5–7.5% Manganese

This composition makes 201 a clever balance of strength, affordability, and weather resistance - perfect for certain applications like outdoor furniture.

Why 201 Stainless Steel Works For Furniture

We chose this quality stainless steel for our designs because it ticks the boxes:

  • Stronger than mild steel

  • More affordable than 304-grade stainless

  • Better corrosion resistance than mild steel

  • Lightweight yet robust

In short? It’s durable, economical, and great for most coastal environments. And when you pair that with a top quality powder coat? You get furniture that looks sharp and stays strong.

201 vs 204 Stainless Steel: What’s the Difference?

They’re cousins, not twins.

  • 204 stainless steel typically has a slightly higher nickel content and lower manganese levels than 201.

  • This gives 204 marginally better corrosion resistance, but at a much higher price point.

  • For most outdoor furniture needs, especially when powder-coated, 201 stainless steel delivers comparable performance at better value.

At Ico Traders, we’re all about clever choices, materials that perform well, look beautiful, and help us keep our prices fair.

And How About Mild Steel?

Mild steel is still a favourite of ours, it’s incredibly versatile and cost-effective, and perfect for indoor or sheltered outdoor use. But if you’re living by the coast, or need that extra level of rust resistance? Stainless is the way to go.

Final Thought: Know Your Steel

Understanding materials helps you make smarter decisions and avoid short-lived, throwaway furniture. Whether you’re shopping for a stainless steel stool, a bench seat built to brave the weather, or something for your coastal deck, knowing the why behind the material matters.

When in doubt? Look for 201 stainless steel - it’s the sweet spot between strength, sustainability, and smart design.
