At Ico Traders, we design wire furniture that lasts. Made from steel - a strong, durable, and recyclable material. Our pieces are built to stand the test of time. To help protect your investment and keep your furniture looking its best, it’s important to follow some simple care and maintenance steps.
Each Ico Traders piece is finished with a PVDF base coat and coloured powder coat, which offers protection against the elements. However, steel can still rust if it’s scratched, damaged, or left in harsh environments for long periods.
If you live near the ocean or in areas with high humidity and rainfall, we recommend choosing from our stainless steel range for extra resistance.
When unwrapping your furniture:
Use care with knives or scissors to avoid scratching the surface
Avoid placing table tops or wire surfaces directly on the ground
To keep your wire furniture clean:
Use a soft cloth, mild non-detergent soap, and water
Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh cleaners, which can scratch the surface
For stubborn grime, use a non-abrasive multi-purpose or window cleaner
Always inspect your furniture while cleaning. If you notice scratches or early signs of rust, apply touch-up paint immediately to prevent further damage.
Also, clean off bird droppings and sunscreen as soon as possible. These substances can break down the protective finish and lead to staining or corrosion.
Taking a few regular steps will extend the life of your furniture and keep it looking great:
Check that plastic sliders on the feet are still in place. Replace any that go missing to avoid metal-to-ground contact.
If you see rust forming from a bump or scratch, touch it up quickly using enamel paint. You can also spray affected areas with WD-40 or CRC to drive out moisture and prevent corrosion.
To treat T-staining, apply a liquid or paste polish or even car wax. The earlier you act, the better the results.
New Zealand’s coastal and wet-weather environments can be tough on iron and steel.
If you live near the sea, consider upgrading to our stainless steel furniture, which resists salt air and moisture more effectively.
During long periods of non-use, tilt your chairs against the table rather than placing them upside down. This helps prevent water from pooling in frames or joints.
Cover your furniture when it’s not in use, especially during winter. Use a breathable cover to avoid mould build-up and moisture retention.
For maximum protection, store furniture in a dry, sheltered, and well-ventilated area during the off-season. Doing so will also reduce the chance of knocks and scrapes.
When you’re ready to dispose of packaging or old furniture:
Take all recyclable materials to your local waste disposal centre
Where possible, choose to reuse or recycle instead of sending items to landfill
At Ico Traders, we believe in long-lasting design and circular living. With the right care, your wire furniture will remain a beautiful and functional part of your space for many years to come.
